Success at the British Schools Karting Championship - Round 1

Yesterday evening, 25 March, we entered 4 teams of 3 students who had been training for the British Schools Karting Championship (www.bskc.co.uk).

Almost 600 teams are entered this year from across the country and The Wheels Project took part in one of the Round 1 heats at TeamSport in Avonmouth. 11 teams of 3 drivers competed over 6 races of 10 minutes each with points being awarded for 'first past the post'.  3 places were up for grabs which will qualify for the semi final round of the championship to be held in this region at Thruxton Racing Circuit on Sunday 27 April.

The competition last night was intense with 6 teams jockeying for the top 3 places.  The result went down to the final race of the evening with Wheels BEC A starting the race in 5th place overall and needing to beat its 2 closest rivals by a margin of 2 points.  With 2 laps to go we were lying in 4th place with our 2 main rivals in 1st and 2nd position.  It looked like we were going to lose out but the 2 teams ahead of us were black flagged for persistent bumping and boring and were asked to leave the track for a 20 second penalty.  This left us in 2nd place and, as luck would have it, seemingly clear to take the qualifying position.  One of the penalised drivers came out and made up sufficient places on the track to finish 2 places behind us and to tie the overall point score for the evening.  The result was decided by most wins recorded by each of the teams that qualified and it fortunately landed in our favour.  The other teams qualifying are BEC B and Winterbourne International Academy.

So, well done to our Wheels BEC A team which will be joining 2 other teams on the evening to go forward into the Regional Semi Finals.

Commiserations to our other teams which failed to qualify.

Congratulations to all of them for working so hard to improve their driving standards throughout the training period and for giving such strong support to their team mates.
